Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced the discontinuation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar. The declaration was made on February 8, emphasizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dedication to strengthening the country’s borders.
Home Minister Shah highlighted the importance of preserving internal security and maintaining the demographic balance in the border regions of India adjacent to Myanmar. In line with this objective, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has proposed the immediate suspension of the FMR. The Free Movement Regime, which allowed unrestricted movement of individuals within specified areas along the India-Myanmar border, has faced scrutiny due to concerns about security risks and demographic changes.
Amit Shah utilized the microblogging platform X to underscore Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to securing the nation’s borders. This decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing the security of India’s border regions and implementing robust border management mechanisms.
