Brian Lara pointed out that RCB is grappling more with a structural issue rather than a problem with their form. Ahead of their IPL 2024 clash on April 11, the batting legend expressed his thoughts on the contest between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Lara noted that Mumbai Indians, after a customary slow start, have regained momentum with a recent win against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium. On the other hand, Lara emphasized that RCB needs to address their batting combination as they are facing a “structural problem” within their team.

“MI seems to be gaining form, especially after their recent victory. It was impressive to see Romario Shepherd, the West Indian, perform well. I feel they have their timing right. RCB, on the other hand, seems to be dealing with more of a structural issue. While their form is acceptable, I believe they are not deploying the right team composition on the field. Their batting order also seems off. MI appears to have a better grasp of their batting order. Although Suryakumar Yadav has been out of form lately, his return to the field strengthens their unit. RCB, however, is still searching for their best form and lineup. Players like Mahipal Lomror, who have shown promise, are not consistently getting opportunities. RCB should focus more on nurturing local talent rather than solely relying on their star-studded overseas players, who have yet to deliver this season. Winning the IPL trophy requires contributions from local players, and RCB should involve them more in crucial game moments,” Lara commented during the ‘Star Sports Press Room’.

Meanwhile, Lara’s co-panellist and former India cricketer Ambati Rayudu recalled his experiences of playing against RCB. Rayudu highlighted that facing RCB often brings out the best in opposing teams. He emphasized the need for RCB to extend their batting lineup and adopt a balanced approach rather than relying heavily on top-order players.

“Playing against RCB tends to bring out the best in teams. However, the scenario seems different now compared to earlier times. RCB needs to expand their batting lineup and distribute their best players proportionately. They cannot afford to place all the pressure on young players by concentrating all their key players at the top of the order. Glenn Maxwell should ideally bat at No. 6 or No. 7 and finish games alongside Dinesh Karthik. This approach would benefit RCB in the long run,” Rayudu suggested.
