Google’s recent layoffs have extended beyond the Python Foundation team, raising concerns among employees worldwide. In 2024, the tech giant’s layoffs have sparked apprehension globally. Previously, Google terminated 28 employees who protested against the company’s $1.2 billion contract with the Israeli government, known as ‘Project Nimbus’. Subsequently, more than 20 employees were sacked for the same reason. According to Tech Crunch, Google has initiated layoffs affecting key personnel from the Flutter, Python, Dart, and other teams. Affected staff members reportedly shared their experiences on social media. While Google confirmed the layoffs, it did not specify the roles or teams affected. The company stated its focus on streamlining its structure and providing more opportunities to work on its “most innovative” projects. A Google spokesperson mentioned the company’s significant opportunities ahead, noting changes made throughout the second half of 2023 and into 2024 to enhance efficiency and alignment with priorities. Google clarified that the recent layoffs were not company-wide but part of routine business reorganizations. Laid-off employees will have the chance to apply for other positions within Google. The layoffs, decided at higher levels within the company, affected numerous teams, as revealed by a Google PM for Dart and Flutter. The report disclosed that Google laid off 50 employees across three locations in Sunnyvale. In support of affected employees, Google pledged to assist them in finding new roles within or outside the organization, providing access to outplacement services and severance packages. These measures underscore Google’s commitment to its workforce and efforts to minimize the impact of the layoffs.
