Geoffrey Hinton, recognized as the pioneer in artificial intelligence (AI), recently addressed concerns regarding job displacement caused by AI and automation. He advocated for the implementation of a “universal basic income” by governments to support those affected by these changes.

AI has revolutionized various aspects of modern life, but alongside its benefits, there are growing concerns about job losses attributed to its widespread adoption. Hinton, often referred to as the “Godfather of AI,” expressed his apprehension regarding the technology’s potential to replace numerous mundane jobs. He emphasized the responsibility of governments in managing the impacts of AI on income inequality.

In addition to highlighting the need for a universal basic income, Hinton underscored the importance of governments ensuring financial support for individuals affected by layoffs, regardless of their financial status. He warned that without such measures, the wealth generated by AI advancements would primarily benefit the affluent, exacerbating societal disparities.

During discussions at Downing Street in London, Hinton raised concerns about potential existential threats posed by AI, describing them as “quite scary.” He cautioned against the misuse of AI technology by malicious actors and the risks associated with the development of AI chatbots surpassing human intelligence.

Geoffrey Hinton, born on December 6, 1947, is a highly esteemed figure renowned for his groundbreaking research in psychology, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, and cognitive science. His pioneering work in neural networks and machine learning has earned him the title of the “Godfather of AI.”
