Udupi has initiated a groundbreaking environmental project with the launch of the “Miyawaki forest” project, aimed at creating compact green areas for conservation. Led by Avinash Kamath, Gururaj Sanil, Raviraj HP, and environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche from Mangaluru, the project was inaugurated at Kamalabai High School in Udupi on June 10, 2024. The project commenced on a 1.50 cent plot at Kadiyali High School, Kadiyali, with the planting of 62 plant species, which will be carefully nurtured over the next two years. Avinash Kamath highlighted the importance of such initiatives in urban areas, especially in the face of recent heatwaves, emphasizing the role of individual responsibility in combating global warming.
Gururaj Sanil, explaining the project’s objectives, pointed out its dual goals of reducing urban heat and addressing water scarcity. He encouraged others to replicate the project in their own communities, showcasing its potential as a sustainable solution.
Environmental advocate Jeeth Milan Roche discussed the selection process for plant species, including endangered varieties, and the adherence to the Miyawaki method, known for its rapid growth. He emphasized the thorough planning involved, from soil testing to strategic planting based on plant height.
The planting ceremony saw active participation from students and dignitaries, including businessman Ganesh, Dr. Vijayendra Vasanth, president of the SDMC at Kadiyali High School Sudharshan Nayak, and the school’s headmaster.
