You may be familiar with BlueSky, Jack Dorsey’s alternative to Twitter. In case you’re not, BlueSky is a platform similar to Twitter, conceived by Dorsey during his tenure as CEO of Twitter. Following Dorsey’s departure and subsequent changes in leadership at Twitter, BlueSky transitioned from being an invite-only platform to one that is now open to all users, allowing anyone to sign up without needing an invite code.

Originally launched as an invite-only beta version in February 2022, BlueSky has now expanded its accessibility to the public. BlueSky operates much like Twitter, but with its own unique features, such as the upcoming “labeling service.” This service will empower users and organizations to create labels for content moderation purposes, including fact-checking posts or making alterations to content.

BlueSky’s CEO, Jay Graber, discussed this approach last year, highlighting the platform’s commitment to providing users with greater control over content labeling compared to traditional social networks.

Recently, BlueSky released a paper detailing the AT Protocol, which serves as the platform’s underlying framework, ensuring smooth operation.

Originally conceived under Jack Dorsey’s leadership at Twitter, BlueSky transitioned into its own independent company in 2021, now led by Jay Graber and a team of professionals. BlueSky aims to establish a network of interconnected social apps, enabling users to seamlessly switch between platforms while retaining control over their data—an emphasis on account portability that sets it apart from other social networks.

BlueSky also boasts a unique “marketplace of algorithms,” allowing users to customize their feeds rather than relying on a single master algorithm. This feature enhances user control over content consumption and attention management.

Although initially associated with Twitter, BlueSky has since become entirely independent. Despite its relatively smaller size compared to other social networks, BlueSky has experienced rapid growth, attracting over three million users since its inception. With its recent opening to the public, BlueSky presents an intriguing alternative for those seeking a fresh perspective in social media platforms.
