R Ashwin expressed contentment after becoming only the second Indian to reach the milestone of 500 Test wickets and indicated no desire to surpass Anil Kumble’s national record of 619 wickets. Ashwin achieved this feat by dismissing England opener Zak Crawley during the final session on day two, joining the elite club of bowlers who have reached ‘Mount 500’ in Test cricket history.
Speaking to the media after the day’s play, the 37-year-old Ashwin stated that he has no specific goal of chasing more wickets to reach Kumble’s record. He emphasized the importance of living in the present moment and taking each day as it comes, especially considering the uncertainties of the future at his age.
Reflecting on his journey to this milestone, Ashwin described it as a long and memorable one. He credited his unexpected transition to spin bowling and highlighted key moments in his career, including his introduction to bowling with the new ball in the CSK dressing room and his eventual Test debut. Despite initial doubts about his ability to succeed as a Test bowler, Ashwin expressed satisfaction with his achievements over the past decade.
Despite his significant accomplishment, Ashwin maintained a focused attitude, indicating a preference for maintaining his concentration on the ongoing Test match rather than indulging in elaborate celebrations.
