A recent study conducted by the Christian Medical College Vellore in Tamil Nadu indicates that a significant number of Indians experience lung function impairment after recovering from acute Covid, with approximately half reporting symptoms like shortness of breath. This finding has raised concerns among experts, who suggest various factors such as underlying health conditions and environmental pollution may contribute to this outcome.

Comparing data from Europe and China, the study found that Indians exhibited a higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms post-recovery. Specifically, nearly half of the participants experienced shortness of breath, while over a quarter reported coughing. Moreover, the study highlighted a high prevalence of comorbidities among participants, with conditions like diabetes mellitus and chronic lung diseases being common.

Lung function tests conducted as part of the study revealed a concerning trend of impairment, particularly in the diffusion capacity, which is crucial for gas exchange in the lungs. Notably, individuals with more severe Covid infections showed higher rates of impairment, with those requiring ventilation displaying the worst lung function impairment post-recovery.

Experts speculate that factors such as the high prevalence of tuberculosis in India and air pollution could contribute to the observed lung damage. However, none of the study subjects had active tuberculosis at the time of recruitment. Access to quality healthcare, both during and after infection, is also considered crucial in influencing recovery outcomes.

Looking ahead, experts anticipate a rise in respiratory diseases among Covid survivors and emphasize the importance of comprehensive post-recovery care. Measures such as regular exercise, vaccination, and avoiding outdoor air pollution are recommended to mitigate the risk of disease and promote lung health.
