In an exclusive conversation with Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi on Friday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to swiftly respond to any terrorist activities aimed at disrupting peace in India, delivering a stern message to Pakistan.
Singh asserted, “If a terrorist attempts to escape to Pakistan, we will pursue and neutralize them even on Pakistani soil. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken the truth… India possesses the capability, and Pakistan is beginning to comprehend that.” This statement came in response to a report in UK newspaper The Guardian alleging that the Indian government authorized assassinations in Pakistan as part of a broader strategy to eliminate terrorists abroad.
The Ministry of External Affairs refuted the claims made by The Guardian, labeling them as “false and malicious anti-India propaganda.” The ministry reiterated an earlier statement by India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, denying that targeted killings in other countries were part of the Indian government’s policy. Singh underscored, “India seeks to maintain friendly relations with its neighbors. Our history bears witness – we have never initiated aggression against any nation or encroached upon foreign territory. This is the essence of India’s character.” However, he emphasized that those attempting to intimidate India through terrorism on its soil would face consequences.
Regarding Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Singh affirmed that the region has always been and will continue to be an integral part of India. He expressed confidence that the people of PoK would themselves demand to be reunited with India, citing recent demonstrations in the region. Singh highlighted the return of normalcy and accelerated development in Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370. While discussing the possible revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the Valley, Singh mentioned that the decision ultimately rests with the Home Ministry.
Singh also addressed concerns about China’s claims to Arunachal Pradesh, reaffirming India’s sovereignty over the region. He emphasized that Arunachal Pradesh has always been an integral part of India and asserted the government’s commitment to protecting its territorial integrity.
