A fire safety certificate is a crucial document that confirms a building’s compliance with fire prevention and safety regulations. However, alarming data reveals that out of 1,225 hospitals in Delhi, only 196, including private and government facilities, possess a valid fire safety clearance (FSC) approved by the Delhi Fire Services (DFS).
The DFS data indicates that merely 196 hospitals have sought FSCs for their premises. Delhi is home to 1,183 private hospitals, including nursing centers, along with 12 MCD hospitals and 30 Delhi government hospitals.
DFS Chief Atul Garg emphasized the importance of FSCs, stating that they certify adherence to fire safety protocols outlined in Rule 33 of the Delhi Fire Services Rule. He explained that for government hospitals, regular inspections are conducted to ensure compliance with safety measures such as proper entry and exit doors, adequate fire extinguishers, sprinklers, and sound wiring. Following a thorough audit, if all criteria are met, the FSC is approved and issued to the premises.
Regarding private hospitals, Garg stressed that it is their responsibility to apply for an FSC, irrespective of whether their registration is expired or valid. This requirement is essential for ensuring the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
The lack of FSCs in the majority of Delhi’s hospitals underscores the urgent need for all healthcare facilities to prioritize fire safety measures. Obtaining a valid FSC should be a top priority for hospital administrators to mitigate the risk of fire-related incidents and protect lives and property.
