In under 24 hours following the 7.6-magnitude earthquake, approximately 150 smaller earthquakes occurred on Japan’s Noto Peninsula. The region is characterized by several active faults, where compression forces underground plates together, leading to their upward displacement—a phenomenon referred to as a reverse-type fault mechanism. The frequency of earthquakes in the area has been on the rise since 2018.
